AKA Cheesy Sloppy Joe Dip. I just had to say that right away.
I don’t really pay much attention to football except for one thing: football food. Appetizers, bite-sized little things, and of course any and all dips are all right up my alley.
I’m helping to promoteย McCormickโs 50 Dips for 50 States effort during the professional football playoffs this weekend with this dip. The McCormick kitchens have been hard at work over the past six months creating a dip for every state. Thereโs a Maine Lobster and Spinach Dip, an Arizona Cheesy Chimichanga Dip,ย and 48 more.
I madeย Motor City Coney Dipย to represent the state of Michigan and their team. For readers who know me, yes I live in San Diego, but Michigan is the state I was given.
It’s interesting that when most people hear โConey Island Hot Dogโ they think Coney Island, New York, but the popular food actually got its start in Detroit. A Coney Dog is traditionally topped with a savory meat sauce.
The dip is easy, ready in about 15 minutes, tastes like cheesy sloppy Joes, and it’s sure to please any crowd. I browned ground beef, added a packet ofย McCormickยฎ Sloppy Joe Seasoning Mix,ย and after simmering I topped it with cheese and popped it under the broiler.
Iย cheese-ified McCormick’s originalย Motor City Coney Dipย because in my world cheese makes everything better.
Especially when it’s lightly browned and topped with green onions for extra flavor.
This weekend Detroit and Seattle are playingย and one of my best blogging friends, Jaclyn of Cooking Classy, is my dip rival. She made Washington’s dip. Go check out her fabulous recipe here.

Motor City Coney Island Dip (AKA Cheesy Sloppy Joe Dip)
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef, I used 93% lean
- 1 package McCormickยฎ Sloppy Joe Seasoning Mix
- 1 cup tomato juice, such as V8ยฎ Vegetable Juice (I used low-sodium)
- ยฝ cup Kitchen Basicsยฎ Original Beef Stock
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese blend
- 1 green onion, sliced into thin rounds for garnishing
Instructions
- Brown meat in large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain fat if necessary.
- Stir in Seasoning Mix, tomato juice, stock, and bring to boil. (Note โ Although the Seasoning Mix packet directions say to include tomato paste and water, ignore that and follow my ingredients and directions)
- Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for about 10 minutes or until most of the liquid has reduced and is absorbed; stir occasionally. While it cooks, preheat broiler to high.
- Transfer beef mixture to a 9-inch pie dish thatโs been sprayed with cooking spray (or use the skillet the meat was cooked in under the broiler if itโs an oven-safe skillet), evenly sprinkle the cheese, and broil for about 1 to 2ย minutes, or until cheese has melted and is as lightly browned as desired. Watch it closely because cheese burnsย very quickly under the broiler.
- Evenly sprinkle with green onions before serving. Serve immediately with toasted French bread baguettes, chips, waffle fries, crackers, or your favorite dippers. Dip is best warm and fresh.

A quick, easy, delicious looking dish. I need to try this.
Well, I’m a football fan, Green Bay Packers, and Michigan is just close enough to enjoy this dip. My husband will NOT get off his recliner until that game is over and done. Hopefully, the Packers will prevail.
Enjoy the game…and the dip!
Oooohh! My Hubby will love this dip! Just in time for football weekend!
I’m all about just moving right onto football food!! This dip? I’d eat it ALL.
Cheese, it’s my love language!
This native Michigander appreciates your dip recipe! I grew up about 1/2 hour from Flint, MI (yes, THAT Flint!) and there is a difference between Flint coneys and Detroit coneys. Of course, my loyalty lies with the Flint version. They have to be on a Koegel’s hot dog. I rarely get to eat them now (I live on the west side of Michigan and they are hard to find here) but I had the chance to have an authentic Flint coney last weekend. Tasty and nostalgic.
Hope that wasn’t too much info–thank you for making a dip that commemorates Detroit and the Lions (I’m also another one who doesn’t keep up with football, but I have to be happy that the Lions finally don’t suck! Ha!).
Wow, lots of great Michigan info that I never would have known! Here’s to the Lions this weekend!
The playoffs are this weekend?!?! You can tell I really keep up with football. I’m with you on the appetizers, dips and finger foods though. This does look good…cheese makes anything wonderful!
