Campfire Apple Crisp Foil Packs with Caramel Sauce — EASY, zero cleanup, made on the grill (or oven) in record time, and tastes amazing!! Juicy apples, chewy crumble topping, and luscious salted caramel...SO irresistible!!

Almost four years ago to the day, I posted a recipe for 5-Minute Microwave Apple Crisp for One.

It’s a reader favorite and social media darling because every year around this time that recipe becomes popular again and sees some social media love, which is what jogged my memory about it.

Since foil-pack-anything seems to be the current rage, I foil pack-ified the recipe and it turned out fabulously.

The apples are juicy and tender, the crisp topping adds chewy texture, there’s plenty of cinnamon-sugary flavor, everything is drizzled with salted caramel sauce, and topped with whipped topping or ice cream.

It’s a restaurant-quality dessert that’s made in one bowl, ready in under 15 minutes, there’s almost zero cleanup, and is made with ingredients most everyone keeps on hand!

How to Make Campfire Apple Crisp

This might be a “campfire” recipe, but a grill works just as well! Use whichever cooking method is easiest for you.

  1. Mix together the apples, cornstarch, sugars, and spices. Divide between two large sheets of foil.
  2. Make the oat crisp topping and sprinkle evenly over the apples.
  3. Carefully fold up the edges of the foil packs and seal tightly to ensure no steam escapes.
  4. Because I’m impatient, I crank my grill to high and let it heat up which is about 750F (screaming hot), place the foil packs directly on the grill grates, turn the heat down to medium, close the cover, and cook for about 7 minutes.

Safety Tip

Be careful when you open the apple crisp foil packs because there is a lot of steam. I wait a couple minutes and open with oven mitts on before drizzling with luscious salted caramel sauce and adding the whipped topping that melts beautifully into the warm campfire apple crisp.

Recipe FAQs

What kind of apples should I Use?

Any baking apple will work in this recipe. I used Gala apples, but Fuji or Honeycrisp would also be great.

Should I peel the apples?

I didn’t peel my apples, but you’re welcome to do so if you don’t like the texture of cooked apple peels.

Can This Recipe Be Prepared in Advance?

If you’re actually going camping and want to prepare the apple crisp foil packs in advance, you can. Wait to cook the apple crisp until you plan on serving it, but feel free to assemble and chill the foil packs.

Can This Recipe Be Doubled?

Yes, very easily! This caramel apple crisp recipe makes two large foil packs, which serves about four people. Feel free to double, triple, etc. the recipe as needed!

How long does this campfire foil dessert need to cook?

Because all ovens, grills, and fires vary in their heat output, it’s hard to say exactly how long to cook the packs. I estimate as short as about 7 minutes and as long as about 15 minutes, but it’s highly variable. You may burn the first round if you’re not careful because between the natural sugars from the apples and the added sugars, combined with the heat, charring can happen easily.

Storage

Foil campfire desserts are best eaten right away, but if you wind up with leftovers you can store them in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the fridge.

Ingredients

Apple Layer

  • 2 medium/large apples, diced into 1/4-inch cubes (I did not peel mine, peel if you wish; I used Gala; Fuji, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or your favorite may be used)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, diced into small 1/8-inch sized cubes
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • optionally add pinches ground ginger, pumpkin pie spice, cloves, allspice, etc. based on preferences

Crisp Topping

  • ¼ cup 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced into 1/8-inch sized cubes
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup old-fashioned whole rolled oats
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • salted caramel sauce
  • whipped topping or ice cream, optional for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat grill to high (or preheat oven to 450F), place two large sheets of foil on the counter (approximately 12×18-inches); set aside.

Apples:

  • To a medium bowl, add all ingredients, stir to combine.
  • Cut butter into the dry ingredients with a fork, and distribute apple mixture evenly between the two sheets of foil in mounded piles; set aside.

Crisp Topping:

  • To the same bowl, add all ingredients (except salted caramel sauce and whipped topping), stir to combine, cut butter into the dry ingredients with a fork, and evenly top the apple mounds with the crumble topping mixture.
  • Seal up foil packs tightly around the edges to trap the steam in, place packs directly on grill grates, lower the heat to medium, close the grill cover, and cook for about 7 minutes, or until done (bake in the oven for about 15 minutes or until done).
  • Place packs on a plate, allow them to rest for 1 to 2 minutes, and be careful when you open the packs (use oven mitts) because there is a lot of steam.
  • Drizzle with salted caramel sauce to taste and optionally add whipped topping before serving. Recipe is best warm and fresh.

Notes

Cook time: Because all ovens and grills vary in their heat output, it’s hard to say exactly how long to cook the packs. I estimate as short as about 7 minutes and as long as about 15 minutes but it’s highly variable; make sure to keep a watchful eye so they don’t burn.
