Drinking a whole chocolate cake batter milkshake sure beats the one or two measly licks of the batter that’s on the beaters after making a chocolate cake.
Then again I’ve never met a batch of cake batter, brownie batter, or cookie dough that I didn’t love to snag a few tastes of.
Plus, it’s summer and it’s hot.
And I’d rather drink my cake than turn on the oven and bake one.
Have your cake and eat it, too.
Have your cake and drink it, too.
But it really doesn’t have to be summer to drink cake batter.
Cake batter is a food, or drink, for all seasons.
There’s a generous scoop of ice cream and a cup of whole milk in the milkshake making it plenty creamy and very rich.
Gather your all-star lineup of ingredients.
You could likely use cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and flour in proper ratios totaling one-half cup to approximate cake mix (see recipe notes) instead of using actual cake mix. However, I like cake mix and I like shortcuts.
Select whatever cake mix you have open – chocolate, vanilla, white, yellow, or strawberry cake mix – you do have at least six different boxes of cake mix open at any given time, right? You can also use brownie mix for a brownie batter milkshake.
Add one half cup of mix, a hearty scoop of ice cream, milk, chocolate sauce, vanilla, and give ‘er a whirl. Adding the milk first so the cake mix floats on top of the milk rather than sitting on the blender blade makes for better blending.
Rim the glass in whipped topping or ice cream and then dip the glass in cake batter in order to get a little extra cake batter to stick to the rim.
Only if you’re interested.
Garnish with sprinkles and anything else that floats your cake batter milkshake boat.
Don’t spill sprinkles all over in your utter excitement over this milkshake.
I really had to from going crazy with more ice cream on top, whipped topping, drizzling chocolate and caramel sauce, or adding a dollop of homemade peanut butter on top.
I figured what I had in the glass was already plenty going on and it is swimsuit season after all.

This looks beyond delicious!
Great idea! I can’t do that much dairy anymore. It makes my tummy angry. :(
Wow this looks absolutely incredible. Do you think I could make it with raw milk or raw cream and almond butter instead of peanut butter?
I’m drooling over this…
yes I’m sure your tweaks would be just fine!
That blender picture is perfection! And usually, I don’t drink glasses of plain milk… I have lactose issues so I typically shy away from them, and ice cream (sadly) unless I want to suffer. Soy just doesn’t do it for me! But after seeing that tall, frosty glass of milk, that’s ALL I want to drink right now! So good.
You can of course doctor it up with vegan ice cream and vegan milks :)
I wouldn’t drink milk ever as a kid, so my mom would buy me chocolate milk – it was the only way she could get me to drink it. My siblings all still have a glass of milk with their dinners.
And milkshakes? My favorite tradition growing up was popcorn and milkshake night. Once a month or so, on a Sunday night, we’d have poporn for dinner and a milkshake made with Carnation Malted Milk powder. Oh, so good.
I can totally see you as a milkshake girl!
Oh Averie, this looks sooooo creamy! I want it for lunch!
oh my gosh Averie! this sounds so amazing! i LOVE cake batter — or at least, GF cake batter! haha my fav milkshake must include peanut butter, and lots of it! haha
Another great use for cake mix!! This looks really rich (just the way I like my sweet stuff)! I never would have thought to use cake mix in a shake so this is really clever. I like regular milk and cream, but I’ll also drink coconut and almond milk. I don’t really care for some of the other alternative milks on the market like hemp, soy or rice though.
Hi Averie! I love milk and milk products, including milkshake. and my favorite would be coffee, we all love coffee milkshake… :)
You had me at cake batter milk shake. This looks as good as the Chocolate Cake Shake from Portillo’s. Yummy!
Crazy!
Great way to use up cake mixes.
I’m out of jimmies, thanks for the reminder! lol
WOW.
Sponsored by the milk lobby?
Pretty sad to see this on this blog — thought you promoted a responsible plant based diet, not the milk lobby.
Ditto! Thank you, Pam!
OMG YES!!!! I’ve been out of town Averie and over the hot sunny weekend at the lake, I would’ve DIED for one of these babies! I think you may have made this milkshake with me in mind? ;)
“Have your cake and drink it too.” Love it. And yes, I have about 4 open cake mix boxes in my pantry. I wonder how this guy would taste with yellow cake mix? Amazing. And brownie? Glorious.
I’m not really a milk drinker. In fact, I sort of hate the stuff. I like almond milk or soy milk, but I never actually pour myself a glass. I put them IN things like smoothies or milkshakes. And I know we’ve talked about it before.. almond milk IN coffee is disgusting! Ahh! Gotta have my creamer for that. :)
There are sooooo many ways to go with this little milkshake from yellow to funfetti to sprinkles (yes, so you)…lots of them have already been done. Relayed, parlayed, Pinterested and played out but I kind of didn’t care and did it anyway. And yes, you and I with the cake mixes…always something open :)

Ok, if you insist, I’ll eat a milkshake that tastes like cake mix…and I’m sure I will LOVE it!
And I really think you will!
