Drinking a whole chocolate cake batter milkshake sure beats the one or two measly licks of the batter that’s on the beaters after making a chocolate cake.

Then again I’ve never met a batch of cake batter, brownie batter, or cookie dough that I didn’t love to snag a few tastes of.

Plus, it’s summer and it’s hot.

And I’d rather drink my cake than turn on the oven and bake one.

But it really doesn’t have to be summer to drink cake batter.

Cake batter is a food, or drink, for all seasons.

There’s a generous scoop of ice cream and a cup of whole milk in the milkshake making it plenty creamy and very rich.

Gather your all-star lineup of ingredients.

You could likely use cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and flour in proper ratios totaling one-half cup to approximate cake mix (see recipe notes) instead of using actual cake mix. However, I like cake mix and I like shortcuts.

Select whatever cake mix you have open – chocolate, vanilla, white, yellow, or strawberry cake mix – you do have at least six different boxes of cake mix open at any given time, right? You can also use brownie mix for a brownie batter milkshake.

Add one half cup of mix, a hearty scoop of ice cream, milk, chocolate sauce, vanilla, and give ‘er a whirl. Adding the milk first so the cake mix floats on top of the milk rather than sitting on the blender blade makes for better blending.

Rim the glass in whipped topping or ice cream and then dip the glass in cake batter in order to get a little extra cake batter to stick to the rim.

Only if you’re interested.

Garnish with sprinkles and anything else that floats your cake batter milkshake boat.

Don’t spill sprinkles all over in your utter excitement over this milkshake.

I really had to from going crazy with more ice cream on top, whipped topping, drizzling chocolate and caramel sauce, or adding a dollop of homemade peanut butter on top.

I figured what I had in the glass was already plenty going on and it is swimsuit season after all.

  • 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup, divided
  • ยฝ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • sprinkles for garnishing, optional

Instructions

  • Combine milk, ice cream (I have made this with vanilla cookie dough, vanilla, and chocolate ice cream โ€“ use what you have), cake mix, at least 2 tablespoons chocolate sauce, and vanilla in aย high-speed blenderย and blend until smooth and creamy.ย Serve immediately.
  • Optionally, before serving, dip the rim of the glass in whipped topping or run ice cream-dipped fingers around the rim so itโ€™s moistened and sticky. Dip the moistened rim into a shallow bowl with cake mix, graham cracker crumbs, or sprinkles. Garnish milkshake with whipped topping, sprinkles, a drizzle of Nutella, peanut butter, or chocolate syrup as desired. ย Tip:ย Make your own cake mix by combining approximately 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, and 1 tablespoon flour.

  1. Absolutely in love! Going to try this very soon, and the rest of the recipes I just saw on the side also! In love with your blog now!! :D My stomach and taste buds thank you.

  2. Great photos, but why repeat them? The one milkshake photo with the straw leaning to the right is shown 3 times in the post.

    1. Because I felt like posting the pics I did. My photos, my blog, my decisions. Thanks for reading!

  3. I want to CRY after reading this and looking at all of those recipes (in the BEST way).

Craving sweets like never before, thanks for sharing : )

  4. I love this recipe and your blog. I would love if you could link to Thursday Food Fest. I open Wed at 7pm. Sarah

  5. I’ve been looking at your website for a while. It helped a lot when I was trying to do a raw diet, or when I’ve had periods of wanting to just be Vegan…I’ve been a vegetarian for the past 15 years or so. And when I browse your desserts I die. Just dead. All of the ones listed above I’ve been coveting all day. Thank you for these and your continued experimentation in the dessert department.

  6. This is a spectacular idea! Chocolate + Cake + Icea Cream = Heaven!
I am a constant sucker for milkshakes, but I have this tendency to put Oreos into EVERYTHING. This recipe was also a bit to thin for my taste, but it could be because I used frozen yogurt not ice cream.
So to kick up this recipe I added 3 crushed Oreos and about 1/3 of a cup more frozen yogurt :)

    1. Thin? Yes it had to have been the fro-yo because I used full-fat Haagen Dazs and cream (not milk) as I indicated in the recipe and holy thickness! Do real ice cream next time AND the Oreos (fun!) and you’ll be happy!

  7. Good heavens that sounds too good to be true! It’s so hot out, I could really use one of these right now. Stunning photos as well (as usual)!
I just sent you an email about a fun idea I have….can’t wait to hear what you think! :)

  8. Cake batter. YES PLEASE. Your photos are stunning. Milkshakes rock. I love those glasses! :)

    1. Thanks, Dorothy. I love the glasses, too. They are almost vintage-ey and I dig that.
