Honey Mustard Chicken Tenders

I love all mustards. Yellow, Dijon, spicy, grainy, you name it and I’m a fan. Add some honey and it’s even better. My daughter also loves honey mustard and this honey mustard chicken recipe hit the spot.

It’s ridiculously easy, ready in 20 minutes, and the honey mustard coats the chicken beautifully and clings perfectly to the nooks and crannies of the little broccoli trees. Broccoli is made for soaking up sauce of any kind.

You can omit the broccoli if you’re not a fan but it’s so good slathered in honey mustard and it stays crisp-tender.

By preparing the chicken with the broccoli, you knock out your protein and vegetable in one skillet in a matter of minutes. A win on all accounts.

What’s in the Honey Mustard Chicken?

To make the honey mustard chicken tenders with broccoli, you’ll need:

  • Honey
  • Yellow mustard
  • Dijon mustard
  • Olive oil
  • Chicken breasts (I used chicken breast tenders)
  • Salt and pepper
  • Broccoli florets

Can I Use Another Type of Mustard?

Yes! You can use different types of mustard than the recipe calls for. I used a mixture of yellow and Dijon mustards, but a spicy brown or grainy mustard would taste delicious here too.

How to Make Honey Mustard Chicken

The ingredients you’ll need for this easy recipe are: two types of mustard, honey, chicken breasts (I used breast tenders), broccoli florets, salt and pepper, and olive oil.

First, whisk together the honey and mustards until combined. Set this aside for the time being, as you’ll be adding it to the chicken later.

Then, cook chicken tenders in a little olive oil over medium-high heat until cooked through most of the way. Add the broccoli and homemade honey mustard chicken sauce to the pan and cover with the lid.

You’ll need to let the broccoli steam for a few minutes until it’s crisp-tender. This also gives the chicken time to finish cooking, and because you’re steaming the chicken near the end of the cook time it won’t dry out.

You can enjoy the honey mustard chicken and broccoli as is, or pair it with your carb of choice (quinoa, rice, and buttered noodles all pair nicely with this dish).

Tips for the Best Honey Mustard Chicken

My biggest piece of advice is to taste the honey mustard sauce before you add it to the skillet chicken. Your tastes may vary from mine, so feel free to add more honey, mustard, or salt to the sauce as needed. It’s best to adjust the sauce flavors before adding it to the skillet, as it’s easier to incorporate all the ingredients at this stage.

Also note that your chicken may need more or less time to cook than what the recipe states. It all depends on how large your chicken breasts are. If you’re in a rush, I recommend using thinner chicken tenders for this recipe.

If you wind up with leftovers, I recommend reheating them in a skillet over medium-low heat with the lid on. If the chicken seems dry, add a tablespoon of water to the skillet to add some moisture to the pan.

Ingredients

  • ยฝ cup honey, or to taste
  • ยผ cup yellow mustard
  • ยผ cup dijon mustard, grainy or spicy brown mustard may be substituted
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • about 1.25 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, I used breast tenders
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ยฝ teaspoon pepper, or to taste
  • 2 to 3 cups broccoli florets

Instructions

  • To a medium bowl, add the honey and mustards and whisk to combine. Taste and check for flavor balance, adding more honey or mustard to taste if necessary; set aside.
  • To a large skillet, add the oil and chicken, and cook over medium-high heat for about 3 to 5 minutes on the first side. Flip and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes on the second side. Cooking time will vary on the thickness of the chicken. Chicken should be about 90% cooked through.
  • Evenly drizzle the honey mustard over the chicken and flip each piece over a few times to ensure both sides are coated evenly.
  • Add the broccoli and stir to combine, making sure the broccoli gets coated with honey mustard. Cover and cook over medium-low heat allowing broccoli to steam for about 3 to 5 minutes or until broccoli is crisp-tender and chicken is cooked through. Serve immediately.

  1. I love this recipe – made it the 3rd time since August tonight, and it’s still delicious. As a college student, I love easy weeknight recipes I can (a) make extras from, and (b) mix and match pieces based off what I have in the fridge/freezer. Nothing like yummy honey mustard to make even frozen spinach taste amazing! Thank you, thank you!

  2. Yummy recipe. Made this for dinner just made it easier. I mixed 1/4 honey and 1/4 Dijon mustard. And istead of broccoli we ate it with southern style cabbage.

  3. Hi, this looks really good but I pretty much never use mustard, so I don’t really want to buy two kinds of mustard. Would the recipe still taste good if I just used one kind? And which kind of the two would be better to use?

    Thanks!

    1. Mustard is pretty inexpensive, maybe 2 bucks a jar for just basic mustard, but if you still don’t want to buy two then I’d use regular mustard rather than dijon but I haven’t tried it that way so can’t speak to exact results.

  4. I’m loving all your easy chicken recipes. After all, isn’t that what we all want? Quick and easy dishes to make our weeknights easier. ย

  5. I have been avoiding mustard lately because of the sodium, but I was at a going away party/BBQ on Saturday and I had some and I forgot how much I love that stuff! ย Why isn’t there a low-sodium version?!!?! ย ย

The broccoli looks delisious ย I’d eat ALL of it!

    1. I know…mustard is amazing, sodium and all. They make low sodium ketchup now (and it’s really good!) but mustard, sigh, I know.

  6. Hi Averie. Did you know that the old links your readers have saved that are attached toย loveveggiesandyoga.com are no longer redirecting to this sight? Do I need to search for my old favorites again and re-save them? Sorry if you have already addressed this issue and I’m being repetitive. Thanks!

  7. That looks flippin’ amazing. And the easy part means I need to try it this week!

  8. I need more easy weeknight dinner ideas! This looks crazy delicious! Pinned!ย

  9. Looks positively vibrant. I love honey mustard as a general rule, and I Love it in a non-salad setting like you’ve got going on here :-)ย

  10. I usually make a honey mustard dressing for my broccoli slaw so I know I’ll love every bite of this! I need a quick, no fuss late lunch for two on Wed a recipe that takes 20 minutes and one skillet is perfect!

    1. Oh honey mustard on broccoli slaw sounds great. I love broccoli salad-ey type recipes in all ways and forms!

    2. I made this for lunch today and I know I’ll make it again! There’s something about honey mustard with chicken and broccoli–it’s just so good! Jon was lucky enough to be home today to have this with me–he loved it too!

      1. Thanks for trying this one right away, Paula! Broccoli is the perfect ‘vessel’ for sauce because it just soaks into the nooks and crannies. Glad you’ll make this one again!
