Loaded Cookie Cake Pie Recipe

I love M&M’s cookies. Something about the buttery dough and the M&M’s peering out make them so hard to resist.

I have quite a collection of M&M’s recipes. These cookies being my best and favorite M&M’s cookies, and there’s this version which I love for springtime. There’s Loaded M&M Oreo Cookie Bars which is one of the most popular recipes on my site along with Triple Peanut Butter Cookie Pie with M&M’s.

And now there’s a giant candy bar pie that can be added to the list. It’s such an easy ‘pie’ to make, but really it’s cookie dough you’re making. And it’s simple, fast, no-mixer, one-bowl dough at that.

Melt butter, stir in an egg, sugars, flour, the chocolate chips, M&M’s, assorted candy, and you’re done. The pie was begging to be loaded with chocolate chips, mini peanut butter cups, and Rolos. The dough is sweet, buttery, and the perfect blank canvas to load with candy.

What I especially like about this kind of pie is that there’s no need to frost it or whip cream. And comparing it to cookies, you don’t have to form individual mounds of dough or chill dough. Always nice.

It would be a hit at any kiddie birthday party, shower, graduation, or girls-night-in. My family loved it and I donated half of it to friends after we scarfed the first half in a sitting.

It’s a little dangerous that it’s ready from start to finish in a half hour. Who said bigger isn’t better?

What’s in This Candy Bar Pie?

To make this M&M’s cookie cake pie, you’ll need:

  • Unsalted butter
  • Egg
  • Light brown sugar
  • Granulated sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • M&M’s
  • Mini peanut butter cups
  • Rolos

Tip: Thereโ€™s no baking powder or baking soda because I wanted the cookie pie to be dense and not at all cakey.

How to Make a Candy Bar Pie

Never made a candy bar pie before? It’s easy! This recipe is basically a giant cookie pie, loaded with various types of candy bars.

  1. Melt the butter, then whisk in the egg, sugars, and vanilla.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and chocolate chips in next.
  3. Then, gently fold in half of the M&M’s.
  4. Turn the cookie dough into a greased 9-inch pie dish and sprinkle the rest of the M&M’s on top. Gently press the peanut butter cups and Rolos into the top of the cookie pie as well.
  5. Bake the M&M’s cookie pie until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean, or with a few moist crumbs, but no batter.

Just as I prefer my cookies, the interior of the cookie pie is slightly underbaked, squishy soft, and supremely moist while the edges are chewier with a slight crispiness.

What Type of M&M’s Should I Use?

I used regular M&M’s, but you’re welcome to use any kind you’d like. Peanut, peanut butter, dark, and so forth will all work nicely here.

Can I Add Other Candy to This Candy Bar Pie?

Yes! I had a smorgasbord of Valentine’s, pre-Easter, and assorted candy from other recipes, and in it went. Use this cookie cake pie recipe as an excuse to clean out your pantry from random candy and half-opened bags of baking chips.

Can I Make This in a Square Baking Dish?

If you don’t have a pie plate on hand, you can likely make this recipe as M&M’s cookie bars. You’d likely need to use a 9×9-inch baking dish or an 8×8-inch baking dish. The bake time may vary slightly, but I can’t say for certain.

Can I Freeze Candy Bar Pie?

Yes! You can freeze this cookie cake pie whole or freeze individual slices. Just note that the color may leech from the M&M’s if you freeze it (it’ll still taste fantastic though!).

Tips for Making a Candy Bar Pie

Bake time: Note that this cookie cake pie is meant to be on the soft and under baked side in the center while the edges are crisper, which is how I prefer my cookies. In general, if you prefer more well-done cookies, bake the pie a few minutes longer.

M&M’s: You can make this loaded M&M’s pie suitable for any holiday or event simply by using different colors of M&M’s!

Baking chips: You’re welcome to use different kinds of baking chips. I prefer using semi-sweet chocolate chips, but white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and so forth will all work.

Ingredients

  • ยฝ cup unsalted butter, 1 stick, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • ยพ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ยผ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 โ…“ cups all-purpose flour
  • pinch salt, optional and to taste
  • ยฝ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ยฝ cup M&M's, divided (I used plain original but peanut, peanut butter, dark, etc. all okay)
  • 6 mini peanut butter cups
  • 6 Rolos, or other mini/bite-size candy bar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Spray a 9-inch pie dish very well with cooking spray; set aside.
  • In a large, microwave-safe bowl melt the butter, about 1 minute on high power.
  • Wait momentarily before adding the egg so you donโ€™t scramble it. Add the egg, sugars, vanilla, and whisk until smooth.
  • Add the flour, optional salt, and stir until just combined; donโ€™t overmix.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Add about 1/4 cup M&M's and stir to combine; reserve remainder.
  • Turn batter out into prepared pie dish, smoothing the top lightly with a spatula.
  • Evenly add the remaining M&M's to the top of the batter, pushing them down slightly to anchor.
  • Evenly insert the peanut butter cups and Rolos into the batter, pushing them down so the top is almost flush with the surface of the dough.
  • Bake for about 24 to 26 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean, or with a few moist crumbs, but no batter. If your pie has risen in the center, it will deflate as it cools.
  • Allow pie to cool in dish for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Pie is meant to be on the soft and underbaked side in the center while edges are crisper, which is how I prefer my cookies. In general, if you prefer more well-done cookies, bake a few minutes longer.
  • Pie will keep airtight at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 6 months (color may leech from the M&Ms if you freeze it).
  • Adapted from Triple Peanut Butter Cookie Pie and Peanut Butter Cup Cookie Dough Crumble Bars.

  1. This pie is baking away for a coworker’s birthday tomorrow as I type this comment up! It’s going to take a tremendous amount of self restraint to not dig in. Thanks for the recipe!!

    1. Ok don’t overbake it since it has to have that just-baked-taste tomorrow and in the summer heat, things dry out fast at room temp so don’t overbake :) and you have a very lucky friend! I hope you guys all love it!

  2. I just made a variation of these – I doubled the recipe, substituted some cream cheese for some butter, and added some chocolate chips. This morning I found out the firehouse near our house would welcome baked goods, so they’re going to get a mishmash of my cupboards! :-)

    1. LUCKY firehouse! :) That’s so nice of you to bake for them and on the Fourth, no less! Thanks for trying the recipe and putting your own little cupboard-cleaning spin on it :)

  3. I recommend 1 TSP vanilla and not the 1 TBS called for in the recipe. 1 TBS. is very overpowering.

  4. My daughter and her friends made this tonight and cleaned out some of our half-used treats in the cupboard. White chocolate, caramel, chocolate chips and Hershey kisses! Quite fantastic for a Friday night treat! :) Thanks for the recipe!

    1. I saw a tag on instagram with a picture! It looked awesome and even better, you get half your cupboard freed up, with all those odds and ends cleared out :)

  5. Hi, Averie. I love this and plan on making it tonight. I recently made a bar recipe that called for brown butter and it added a depth of flavor. I’m wondering if instead of just melting the butter — if I browned it, would the measurements and ingredients still stay the same? I don’t want to risk it especially since I’m sure this will be fabulous just as is!!

      1. I actually made them last night as is and they are FABULOUS!!! I will try the brown butter version next and let you know. They are so quick to whip up I’m sure I’ll be making these over and over and adding different candy treats. I also want to try the browned butter cookie cups — OMG!!! You are the best!

      2. Thanks for making this and glad you loved it! Keep me posted what else you make and how it goes!

  6. I don’t usually comment but I am about to make this for the 3rd time since it was posted. My kids love it and all of their friends at the lunch table beg them to bring it and share at lunch time. If you need a quick dessert for the lunchbox this one is it.

    1. That’s wonderful that you’re making them for the 3rd time and that they’re a big hit with your kids and their friends. I can see this being quite the hit around the lunch table :) My daughter’s 7 yr old friends are immune to all my stuff I think. I pawn off so many leftovers on anyone I can! LOL :)

    1. Teaspoon, tablespoon, what’s the difference with vanilla :) If you want to use less, feel free. I like more :)

  7. This cookie pie is stunning, lovely friend! And it looks perfectly chewy and goooood! I wish I had 2 slices in front of me right now ;) Pinning!

    1. Between this one and your latest cookies, we’re the springtime M&M cookie girls! And thanks for pinning!

  8. Tried these last night and they are fantastic. I baked about five minutes longer and they turned out perfectly for me. I never have softened butter ready when the mood strikes, so I love recipes that call for melted butter and I have this huge bag of m&ms that I’ve been trying to polish off…

Sometimes you just never know with a recipe: is it worth the time and ingredients? But with Averie, I always know they’ll turn out great! :)

    1. What a super sweet comment that you feel my recipes will always turn out and be worth the time & ingredients! And yes to melted butter being a savior. However, for softened butter and lack of planning, I do about 7-8 seconds in the micro. Check, and maybe 3-5 more seconds if necessary. And you’re set. Softened butter :)

  9. Hi Averie!

Trying to decide what to make for my husband’s birthday. This pie or the m&m oreo bars! We just made your ch. chip cookies last week and they were awesome. I loved the pudding ch. chip cookies, but actually we liked your original version the best. They were perfect!

    Thanks!

    1. Thanks for trying both versions of cookies and interesting to hear that you like the Originals. I have readers who make both and like the New, and others who like the Orig. Either way, can’t go wrong, right!

When you say Oreo Bars, do you mean these? https://www.averiecooks.com/2013/09/loaded-mm-oreo-cookie-bars.html I have so many recipes with Oreos! This pie is really smooth and buttery and decadent; whereas the Oreo bars have a ton of texture and crunch. I personally think this pie is ‘cuter’ for a bday; but for a guy, the darkness of the Oreo bars is cool, too. Either way, can’t go wrong. LMK what you choose & how it goes over!

  10. I haven’t been baking for several weeks now, in fact have been so busy with work haven’t eve read my favorite blog! Well I did yesterday and how awsome to have such a simple recipe waiting for me to try! Knowing how much I loved the peanut butter cookie pie, I gave this a shot! Of course like usual I made half the pie non chocolate with butterscotch and payday pieces for my husband. but my Half was exactly how the recipe states! It took all of 10 minutes to whip this out, including clean up and washing the bowl! I baked it a lil longer cuz honestly I think my oven is about to die :( but anyway , delicious!!! We loved it! And will still be loving it today when we dive in :) thanks for an easy fast recipe for this way to busy girl :))

    1. Thanks for the great comment and trying the recipe the same weekend I posted it! The half for your hubs with butterscotch and payday pieces sounds delish, too! And good luck with that dying oven…Gah$$ hate that!

  11. I made this yesterday on a whim… Of course, between six guys, it didn’t last very long! lol it was a hit!

    1. Thanks for the great comment and trying the recipe the same weekend I posted it! I can imagine that 6 guys took this baby down in no time flat :)

  12. WOW. Averie, you just made my sweet dreams come true!! This is the recipe I’ve been searching for!! I’m allergic to peanuts so your last cookie pie wasn’t suitable for me, but wow wow wow! Did I mention, this is next on my list? Amazing. Well done and thank you! :)

  13. Yum, nothing better than a good cookie pie! And it’s packed with M&M’s too.. what more could a girl wish for? I don’t even need the peanut butter cups. I’m serious. On top of that, your pictures look beautiful too :) Just discovered your blog and loving it already ^^

  14. I love cleaning out the pantry by making dessert packed full of all sorts of candy. This cookie pie is exactly that dessert. Love!
