No Power

I’ve never blogged from my iPhone until this post. There was a power plant explosion or power lines severed and almost two million people in San Diego county are without power. The outage also involves parts of Orange Co, Tijuana and northern Mexico, and east to Palm Desert. This is serious.

They do not know when it will be back.

It’s pandemonium here. The streets are gridlock and there are sirens and ambulances and chaos everywhere in my neighborhood.

We will live by candlelight and flashlight until further notice.

It’s also 92f and no AC of course.

We are fine but please pray for the elderly and the sick. The last time i saw the city this way was the 2007 fires.

On lighter matters thanks for the smiles when you told me what items of yours have been discontinued from my last post. At least I’m not the only one that happens to!

Fingers crossed we get power soon! You don’t realize how much you need it til it’s gone!

  1. I hope everyone will be ok!
I have only been out of power for about 2 minutes after a thunderstorm. And it was soooo weird. I can´t imagine how hard it must be…

  2. Wow! I hope they resolve the power crisis soon. Do you have a way of charging your iPhone?
Luckily you eat mostly fruit, veg, so the stove won’t be needed ;)

I have been without power twice as an adult.
First time was due to an ice storm in 1998 that took out most of Quebec & Ontario. Many days (weeks in some cases) before the power came back.
Second time was the North East blackout of 2003. We stayed in our apartment without power for 2 days before going to my parents’ house where they still had power. Repeatedly climbing 11 flights of stairs to pack our stuff, our cats and ourselves into my brother’s car was quite a workout. Car included: 4 humans, 5 cats, and 2 small suitcases.

After that I made sure to always have the following on hand in the house: cash, candles, matches, extra food, extra water, extra wood during winter, extra cat food, extra cat litter, and dynamo flash-lights (no batteries needed), and never let the car go below 1/2 tank of gas.

The only things I haven’t done that I want to do for “self-sufficiency” is:
    – plant a vegetable garden
    – set up rain barrels

  3. I hope you get power restored quickly. The longest I ever went without power was in Florida…2004, Hurricane Charlie, for ten days. In August…everything was hot and sticky! Thank god for a friend with a percolator and a gas range or I think I would have given up. That was the best coffee ever…

  4. Ontario had a HUGE power outage about 8-ish years ago. We were without power for 3 days at the end of August. It was kinda cool at first, but then it got really scary. We cooked and boiled water on our BBQ, but couldn’t open the fridge/freezer very often and the kids were pretty freaked out. Sarah’s still scared of the power going out during storms b/c of those few days. I hope everything gets restored soon!!!

  5. Hope you have power by now. We’ve definitely gone without for days – we get lots of ice storms here so power lines will crash. I don’t know what’s worse no power at 90 degrees or no power at sub 30 degrees. Either way, not good.

  6. Hope everything gets restored, especially for the elderly and the sick. So glad to hear you’re ok. Hang in there. Our town just lost 80% of its power following the hurricane. Took a week to restore, so hopefully it won’t be any longer for you all.

  7. Wow, that’s crazy. So many awful things happening in the US these days! I’m hoping your power comes back soon. The longest I can remember being without power was a loooong time ago due to a nasty blizzard, I remember having to stay at my grandparents’ house. But a few years ago my parents were without power for about a week because of an ice storm. They even canceled school for my sister from about Thanksgiving until the end of Christmas break! I was away at school so I didn’t lose power. Stay safe!

  8. Oh my goodness, saying a prayer for Y’all over here in Arkansas. We went w/out power for 15 days after an ice storm a few years ago, in the dead of winter. We’re in the country, so minus the pandemonium. Generators & 4 wheel drive r the norm. DD told me she like power outtages as we always played games & read together. Hope its not too long – Stay safe!

  9. Averie, thinking of you and the family, please keep us updated, and that is so scary : ( Im hoping power comes back asap xoxo <3

  10. Oh no! Really glad your all ok! There was a big explosion at the main power plant in Cyprus and we barely had electric for two weeks a month or so ago. A couple of hours on 6 hours off… it was an absolute pain but like you said its the elderly and housebound that are a serious cause for concern! :/ Really hope it gets fixed soon! For now enjoy the lovely atmospheric candlelight ;) always a way to put a positive spin on things! :)

  11. I hope they’ve managed to fix the problem now – I’ve never been without power for more than an hour or two and I can’t imagine what it must be like on such a wide scale.

  12. I live in Kenya and power cuts are the norm here. i was actually surprised that p ower cuts in europe are very rare….wish that were the case here!

  13. Bah! The power outage was crazy for sure. I got ice to put some stuff in my fridge to there. I was pretty bummed though because today was supposed to be Taste of Encinitas, but because restaurants couldn’t cook it didn’t happen. It was my bday present, but oh well, next year! I worried about the hospitals as well but they have back up generators, so I think they were fine. I got power back about 45 minutes ago. My mom and I ended up playing cards and scrabble till it came back on in candlelight of course…

  14. Oh shoot, I had no idea it was that bad out there. It went out over by the kids school – but not till they were done for the day. Not a great way to start the school year if they are all gonna have to shut down until further notice.
    Prayers for you guys….xxoo

  15. It was like that here last week, but also with flooding!
What a crazy situation though… what I learned last week with the effects of Hurricane Irene is to be grateful in spite of inconvenience, since many people ended up losing their homes and businesses.
