Are Oats Gluten Free?
This is sort of a trick question. I’ll explain.
Oats themselves are gluten-free. However, the issue that arises is that in the planting of oat crops, harvesting, milling, and transporting the oats, they are frequently cross-contaminated with wheat, rye, or barley which all are gluten-containing grains. So yes, oats are gluten-free inherently but they are surface-level contaminated with gluten, sometimes in large amounts, sometimes in trace amounts. For individuals with true Celiac Disease, gluten should be avoided at all costs.
For individuals like myself who are gluten-sensitive and gluten-intolerant, but it’s not a matter of life-and-death, to each his or her own whether they choose to purchase specifically certified Gluten-Free Oats. My gluten intolerance is not sensitive enough that I need to do this and I am fine using conventional oats, but I also don’t ever eat more than 1/3 cup per day or I will feel the effects systemically; but..
…”There are several companies who now sell “certified gluten-free oats,” which are oats that are farmed, harvested, processed and packed using special methods to avoid cross-contamination with gluten during every step of the way. Gluten-free oats currently sell for around $4 to $5 a pound.” (source)
If you feel that organic oats, Trader Joe’s or WF’s many varieties of oats, the bulk bins at your food co-op, or even Quaker Oats won’t suffice and need a truly Gluten-Free option, check out Gluten Free Oats or Bob’s Red Mill GF Oats.
So that was a long-winded answer but like I said, it’s tricky and only your own personal detective work will tell you whether you need Certified GF Oats or not.

What catches my eye are those Medjool dates – I've never had one! :-D
No bake cookies totally rock! I love the little maple syrup you drizzled over them. They look almost like raw pancakes!
that coffee definitely catches my eye! And the amazing salads with roasted veggies. Looks awesome!
I've never tried TJ's cocoa powder. Is it quality? For raw applications I find I need a quality cocoa powder. I like lake champlain
Thanks for the shout out! Sorry I'm so late catching up…
With the snow lately, I've been sorta unplugging it… :)
My trader joes is a little ways from me, and I never seem to find stuff like you find… I think because the store is a bit small and I always feel cramped by all the other shoppers when I'm there, so I can't enjoy looking around… I will have to make a point to visit it more often to feel more comfortable I think. Love seeing your TJ finds, though!
Your daughter is SOOOOO adorable! And I agree, when I lived in WA, TJ and PCC was was better than Whole Foods, but there are some awesome things about WF…LIKE QUARK! Try it out!
Yah, saw the BBC had an article about depression & the internet- it's flagged for me to read, but I've been too busy being on the internet- GAH! I think that the internet is a double edged sword. Good and bad simultaneously.
Hair- I have to do mine every 3 weeks so luckily I'm a DIY gal or I'd have to mortgage the house.
Flax- interesting that you say that it gives it a peanutty flavor!
TJs- I like to go to the ones that are not crowded and stressful. That cocoa powder looks interesting. I noticed that hersheys lied on their calorie counts of the dark cocoa powder which makes me want to switch brands to prove a point. Grrr on liars. TJs has not been good either- they often lie about their calories. Makes me mad even though I don't count calories at the moment.
mmm i think lately being on the computer and reading blogs has felt more like relaxing. i think it gives me a time where i can just sit back and have fun but it also makes me think about the other things i shouuuuld be doing instead of reading blogs! like right now i should be food shopping, showering, breathing & doing school work!
have a great weekend girl :)
I love flaxseeds in savory and sweet dishes they're soooooo tasty and so good for us! Those cookies look amazing, think my favorite seed would have to be sesame in the form of tahini its just to good! x x
Monster post – so much to comment on!!
I am so glad you tried and like the Ethiopian coffee. It is definitely my fave, and don't forget, it is shade grown (so much better for the birds).
Which Tjs do you go to in Phoenix? I went to the one on 20th a few weeks ago, and they don't have medjools. I don't have either WF or TJs. Such a sad life I lead. :D
I spend SO much time on my compter, from blogging to reading blogs to working to goofing off. I used to say it's better than tv, but maybe not? I at least feel much more productive than after tv.
Sunflower Seed Butter = heaven.
I'm getting my hair done on Wednesday and I cannot wait – it needs a new colour I think, and I definitely need a good trim! As for pottery painting, it sounds fun – I haven't done it since my childhood, but I have fond memories…and those cookies, yet another recipe to add to my ever-growing list of things I must bake! xxx
Hey hon! There is nothing like getting your hair done. I so look forward to it although I dont think that I go often enough. Probably only once every 3 months or so. My hair dresser yells at me everytime=)
TJs is the shit! Although its sssoo crowded all the time. I feel like Im doing battle when Im there. Ha! So I try to schedule to go during non peak hours. Even though TJs is awesome, I still love me my WF.=) I find their 365 brand to not be too expensive at all. Im going to have to check out that coffee though next time I go to TJs. I know you are a huge coffee fan (as am I!) So I trust your coffee expertise=)
Its hard finding a balance to unplug. I work at a computer all day long so when I get home the last thing that I want to do is get back on the computer. But its my only true free time. I try to sneak in my blogging while I have some down time at work although I wish I could do it more! Im such an outdoors person and I love being with friends and family so I make sure that comes first above everything else. So its still a struggle to find balance but Im trying! I do find when Im on OT (which I just started) my moods do seem to be draggier but Im working on it. Taking walks during the days helps.
My favorite kind of nut is almonds at the moment. Oh and pistachios! I freakin love those little things. I always have a bowl of little p's on the coffee table and me and my hubs munch on them. So tasty!
As always Averie my dear I hope you have one fabulous weekend. Take care! xoxoxo!
Those flax cookies sound wonderful! I might have to try them. Hope you had an amazing week. Oh and I am almost able to do the splits again! Well at least with the left leg!!! So excited!
I am lovin' the looks of those flaxseed cookies – they'd be perfect for my fatty february challenge :)
I may be a little addicted to the internet, but I blame the journalist in me. I always want to be plugged in to what's going on. I've got an insatiable thirst for news and events! One thing that has helped me balance out blogging with life is pre-writing my posts whenever I get a spare minute during the day. It makes posting at night so much quicker. As for reading other blogs, I just do it when I have time. Like on the weekends :)
Seeds are definitely sesame for me and nuts are peanuts!
Have a great weekend Averie!
Oh, you make me want to move to where there is a TJ's! I want one soo bad!
Woohoo, graduation! How cool Averie!
Coffee, sniff, sniff……
I'll have to let my boys try those plantain strips. O haven't seen them there yet.
I saw that Go Dairy Free on Amazon and thought about getting it. Did you see the Raw Cashew Cheez recipe on my blog? It came from the Vegan World Fusion cookbook. I think you would really like it. They have it at Barnes and Noble so you could go check it out and see if you like it.
Yes, I think excessive internet use could make you stressed and depressed. I always feel like I have unfinished work and it makes me crazy. I have been on here a lot less lately. My family is far more important to me than what my readers think of me. I can't do it all hon, none of us can, right?
Take care and take a break for yourself, you have my permission :o)
