Easy Fruit Salad Recipe

This tropical fruit salad is non-alcoholic and gets its piรฑa colada name from โ€” you guessed it โ€” piรฑa colada mix, sans alcohol.  I use the shelf-stable, liquid piรฑa colada mix rather than the frozen kind in cans.

I added coconut and almond extracts for an extra boost of tropical flavors. I am a huge fan of both of those extracts and work them into any recipe I can. They really lend to the summery, tropical, warm weather vibe of this pineapple fruit salad.

This summer fruit salad is perfect for parties, potlucks, or holidays like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day.

Or make this fruit salad as a way to take advantage of all the fruit you accidentally overbought at the farmers market when your eyes were bigger than your stomach. Everything looks so good in the summer, and I am guilty as charged!

What’s in Tropical Fruit Salad?

To make the pineapple fruit salad itself, you’ll need:

  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Sweetened coconut flakes

And to make the fruit salad dressing, you’ll need:

  • Piรฑa colada mix (non-alcoholic)
  • Pineapple juice
  • Almond extract
  • Vanilla extract

How to Make Fruit Salad with or without alcohol

How to Make Fruit Salad

Simply chop the fruit into bite-sized pieces if needed, then toss together in a large bowl along with the coconut. Then, stir together the fruit salad dressing and pour over the fruit mixture.

Refrigerate the tropical fruit salad before serving to allow the fruit time to soak up some of that yummy dressing.

Can I Use Different Fruits in This Recipe?

While I used strawberries, grapes, blueberries, and pineapple in this tropical fruit salad, the recipe will work with anything from peaches to nectarines to kiwi to raspberries to blackberries. You can mix and match the quantities of the fruit based on what you have on hand and enjoy most. It’s a very flexible recipe that everyone loves.

How Long Does Fruit Salad Last?

This summer fruit salad will last up to 3 days in the fridge. Give it a good stir before serving leftovers since lots of juice collects at the bottom of the bowl.

Tips for Making Tropical Fruit Salad

If using grapes in your fruit salad, I recommend buying a seedless variety. Otherwise you’ll spend half your time picking seeds out of your mouth as you’re eating this tropical fruit salad.

For the best flavor and texture, use fresh fruits and not frozen to make this recipe. I also used canned pineapple packed in juice (not heavy syrup), but that’s the only canned fruit I’d use in this mixture.

You could definitely spike the fruit salad with rum for an adults-only crowd. Malibu Rum would be perfect here and that sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

    1. A couple of days…once fruit is cut and mixed like this, it’s a bit difficult to keep really fresh tasting and not all watery/soggy.

  1. Love this idea! I always get crazy with produce this time of year and need a way to use it up fast. Great recipe!

  2. A looks so good that I went to buy the Pina colado mix. Ugg, itโ€™s full of junk. I will make the salad but leave the high fructose and other non pronounceables out.

    1. I’m sure there are more natural ways of making pina colada mix if you Google it and take the time to make it.

  3. Definitely going to try this with the Malibu rum…especially since I have that on hand ;) Love the idea of dressing up a fruit salad!

  4. This sounds amazing. I think I will freeze it and serve it that way. Will be amazing on those really hot humid summer days.

  5. As far as the piรฑa colada mix, is it liquid in a bottle, or can you mix the frozen can with water and use that way? ย I’m not familiar with how you buy this. ย Sounds delicious! ย Thanks!

    1. I wrote in the recipe:
1/3 cup non-alcoholic pina colada mix (you want liquid, not the frozen cans)

      Hope that helps!

  6. Pretty! I love the flavors in this recipe… and I agree with Dorothy a splash of rum would be awesome in this!

  7. This sounds absolutely fantastic. Throw a little rum in there and it would get me to eat my fruit!

    1. Yes! Next time you have extra fruit (or rum) do it! Would have been great at the party this weekend :)

  8. As if a big ol’ bowl of fruit isn’t tempting enough! This stuff looks absolutely addictive and I love every bit of it!

  9. Love this idea and it sounds delicious! I think I would be spooning ย up all the juice at the bottom (I like lots of sauce, topping, dressing, etc)!

    1. I love sauce, topping, dressing too…and the extra juice at the bottom of this was sweet saucy perfection!

  10. Ohhh that looks superb! So much fun, and I guess the adult version would be even better ;)
Just a quick heads up – the video on the right starts playing every time I scroll down!
