Piña Colada Smoothie — This creamy smoothies contains just four ingredients and is naturally vegan and gluten-free! I’ve also included instructions on how to turn it into a blended piña colada cocktail!
Non-Alcoholic Piña Colada Smoothie Recipe
Oh how I love a piña colada for breakfast. This version doesn’t have alcohol in it, but you can fix that if you’d like. I was sorting through my photos and realized I made this smoothie when we were in Aruba in August and didn’t post the recipe.
It’s now or never, because all of a sudden I feel like I won’t be cool if I don’t have a steady stream of apple and pumpkin recipes coming daily. As much as I enjoy them, I don’t mind hanging onto summer a bit longer.
San Diego and most of Southern Cal gets our hottest weather of the year right now. It’s been in the high 80s to mid 90s every day for the last week. These piña colada smoothie go down very nicely!
This pineapple banana smoothie is vegan, gluten-free, and won’t break your caloric piggy bank for the day. It clocks in at under 100 calories.
Pre-made piña colada mix is loaded with empty sugar calories. You may as well just eat frosting with a spoon (it’d probably be more fun that way, too). So I lightened it up, without sacrificing taste or flavor.
To add a pop of coconut flavor for pina colada authenticity without adding calories, I used coconut extract. It’s sold in the baking aisle near vanilla and other extracts. It’s usually much more reasonable than vanilla and only about $2 bucks for a 2-ounce bottle at my grocery store.
If you’re a coconut fan, it’s tasty in everything from buttercream frosting to maple syrup for a fun twist.
The bright pop of pineapple, the creaminess from the banana, along with coconut undertones make this healthy fruit smoothie so satisfying. And with a cherry on top, I can’t think of anything I’d rather be drinking right about now. I wish I was drinking it here.
It’s almost the weekend and I’ll take mine with a shot of rum. It’s after 5 o’clock somewhere.
Piña Colada Smoothie Ingredients
To make a virgin piña colada smoothie, you’ll need:
- Frozen pineapple chunks
- Banana
- Vanilla almond milk
- Coconut extract
- Sweetener of choice (optional)
- Shredded coconut (optional)
- Maraschino cherries, for garnish (optional)
How to Make a Piña Colada Smoothie
Making a piña colada virgin smoothie at home couldn’t be simpler! Simply follow these steps:
- To make the piña colada smoothie, simply combine the pineapple, banana, almond milk, coconut extract, and optional sweetener in a blender.
- Blend until the smoothie reaches your preferred consistency.
Can I Prep the Smoothie in Advance?
Yes! The leftover piña colada smoothie mixture can be frozen for up to two months.
You just want to make sure the glass is tightly covered with plastic wrap, or store the smoothie in a jar with a lid. You don’t want the freezer smells seeping into your smoothie!
Can I Add Rum to my Smoothie?
Yes! I made this as a non-alcoholic piña colada smoothie, but you can add a splash of Malibu rum to yours if you’re enjoying it as a poolside beverage.
Can the Coconut Extract Be Omitted?
I know someone will write saying they don’t like coconut. You really can’t have a piña colada without coconut, and if you like piña coladas, this smoothie will be right up your alley.
The coconut flavor isn’t overly intense, promise. However, omit the coconut extract if you wish.
If you simply don’t have coconut extract, then add the optional shredded coconut instead. So long as you add coconut flaovr in some way, you’re good to go!
Tips for the Best Piña Colada Smoothie
I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk in this easy smoothie recipe, which only has about 30 calories per 8 ounces. It’s nearly insignificant.
If you want to bump up the coconut flavor and don’t care about stats, use coconut milk or a splash of cream of coconut, like Coco Lopez. So good, rich, and creamy.
If you want a thicker smoothie, I suggest freezing the fruit beforehand and adding slightly less almond milk than this recipe calls for. You could even make almond milk ice cubes and throw those into the smoothie to make it extra thick.
And, of course, for a thinner piña colada smoothie just add in more almond milk.

I haven’t had a pina colada since my honeymoon which was almost 19 years ago! This looks delicious! (Especially today since I’m not having anything that tastes!) I don’t drink alcohol so I like the version without the rum but my hubby would love this, rum and all! My kids have had a few virgin pina coladas, too, when we went to Hawaii. They loved them. New recipe to try out! :-)
You havent had a pina colada in NINETEEN YEARS??!! Oh dear. You have lost time to make up for – even without the alcohol. I know you love your coconut so I bet you’d dig this!
This sounds great ! Almond Breeze now has a new Almond/Coconut milk that would be perfect for this!
I know they have it and I’ve tried their coconut milk before – mmmm, good stuff!
Averie these are lovely. Aruba is on my list of places to visit and your photos are fabulous. Honestly if it were 80 or 90 I would probably be hanging on to summer to. I can’t believe we are one state away and so hot. Here is Phoenix we are still over a 100 and honestly I am ready for fall. Bring on the pumpkin and the apples. :)
Omg we lived in Scottsdale for 9 mos and it was OPPRESSIVE the whole time. I basically had a panic attack the whole 9 mos and needed to be back in San Diego by water and cool ocean breezes :) My hat is off to you for dealing with that heat!
And your recipes lately have me drooling. The bars, the latte, mmmm, all so good!
I am right there with you holding on to summer in the form of smoothies. I’m excited for fall and for pumpkin but smoothies keep me feeling light and slim so I’ll be drinking them until I’m scraping my windows ;)
Lol – until you’re scraping your windows. Funny, I grew up in MN and then Chicago and know all too well what that’s all about. Ugh.
I think these need to be my re-entry into pina coladas. When I was a kid and had my wisdom teeth out, they gave me pina colada numbing cream. *shudder* Needless to say, I have an aversion. But these? Look too good not to make!
That is like the worst, most awful, heinous, cruel trick. Who does that ??!! Ok well we can skip these. Let’s just go split a bottle of champagne :)
Yeah, I’m going to go ahead and make this for breakfast before work and add the alcohol. No judgements, ok? ;)
PLEASE DO! I’ve been there :) At least the day starts off much more carefree. lol
SO glad you posted this, Averie! It’s still in the 90’s where I am, so it’s still tough for me to think about all of those fall foods yet. Plus, while I love a good pina colada, I don’t love all the calories associated with it…what an awesome option!
Most pina coladas are like mainlining sugar and empty calories. They taste so good going down but yeah. This solves that mess :)
These look wonderful!! I love recreating tropical vacations through my kitchen. It really does bring you back to the place if you make the drink taste the same. These look delicious!
You’re so right!
Coconut rum would definitely be divine in this smoothie. Yum!
I like the idea of having one of these for breakfast (alcohol is required, of course). Ha!
LOL, love it!
Oh how I loved this post! Pina coladas and the beach?! Yessss!
They’d be perfect with your Coney Island post!
I’m a pina colada addict and this skinny one looks like one I would be adding to my repertoire…with the rum :). I love your pictures always!
Thanks for the compliments on my pics!
Can’t think of a much better way to start my day!
This sounds delightful with all the flavors I love rolled into one! Delish!
What a delicious way to extend summer, and definitely with the rum…
I always love your It’s After 5 o’Clock Somewhere posts. Great minds think alike!
I’m so in love with the pina colada flavour so this smoothie is just perfect for me! I recently had some pina colada ice cream which was just not…”pima-colada-y” enough. With all that fruit blended in I bet the flavours really come through here!
Even though the ice cream doesn’t sound quite there, it sounds like a great jumping off place. I think next summer I need to make that! I know now people are long over ‘summer’ things and want their apples and pumpkin but in 8-10 mos they’ll be ready again :)
