Surprised Me

I woke up Valentine’s Day morning to these.

Pink white and red flower bouquet

Scott clearly doesn’t read my blog because I had mentioned that I’d rather spend money on shoes (or just about anything else) than on flowers. They die so fast and they seem so frivolous.

But after having these beauties in the house, I am not complaining.

Red Rose

And I can’t complain about my day, either.

It started off in the kitchen with a stick and a half of melted butter because I made a batch of these.

Ralph’s store-brand butter is on the left and Kerrygold on the right. It’s interesting to note how yellow the Kerrygold is and how pale the Ralph’s brand is in a side by side comparison. Maybe that has to do with grass-fed cows or that Kerrygold says their butter has a higher butterfat percentage.

I need to do a side-by-side comparison with flour and compare store-brand flour and King Arthur flour.

A batch of White Chocolate Snickerdoodle Cookies would be a good starting place I think for a side-by-side bake-by-side.

In addition to melted butter on Valentine’s Day, there was melted chocolate.

I love how smoothly, easily, and effortlessly this chocolate melts.

It’s easier to make Vanilla Cake Batter Truffles (No-Bake) when the chocolate melts smoothly.  Dipping the little balls into their bathtub is much easier when the consistency of the bathwater is just right.

I also made Scott something special for dinner to surprise him.  It wasn’t fancy, but it was special, for him.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and he loves eggs.  I made something similar to the Spinach and Red Pepper Frittata but even more up his alley because it involved potatoes.

  1. My day….yeah.

LOve the flowers! One of the other new profs got flowers from a senior faculty in her dept. Lucky girl. I would have loved some. And I am not a flower girl. One of those days….

    1. Wait…they gave flowers to one new teacher but not you?! Okay…that is just WRONG!!! I am so sorry to hear that, Katie. And after the rest of your day. Oy vey. What is wrong with the world?!

  2. Even if they seem frivolous, sometimes it’s so nice to be surprised like that. Jason surprised me with a certificate for facial and massage!

  3. Those are beautiful flowers! (As well as delicious treats!)

I got a beautiful pot of tulips, card and I had him rent 2 dude movies as my gift to him. Made a great dinner and we spread out a blanket on the floor to watch the movies.

  4. Sounds like an awesome day! I feel the same way about flowers that you do, only when I have them I feel so happy!

  5. That was so sweetens thoughtful of Scott! I have to agree about the shoes! Lol! My family had a good valentines day too. Matt got me flowers and ginger ale. Grace got new coloring books and we had some good friends over with their baby for dinner too. Unfortunately the night ended for me with horrible morning / all day pregnancy sickness.

  6. So beautiful and so sweet! You deserve those beautiful flowers!

I hope Skylar had fun at her party at school!

    Happy Wednesday! <3

  7. Aww, that’s so sweet of Scott!! Dustin and I didn’t exchange any gifts this year, we have WAY too much going on and I really, really didn’t want a thing. When I was getting my hair done yesterday and Dustin went to the bank, my hairdresser said, “maybe he’s getting a surprise for you,” and I was like, “Oh God, hope not!” haha. I wouldn’t complain about any of the sweets on this post showing up somewhere in the house, though. :)

    1. “Oh God, hope not!” <-- That is something, okay EXACTLY something, that would (and has) come out of my mouth re Scott and gifts and such. We are birds of a feather! :)

  8. Such a pretty bouquet! Sounds like you had a lovely day which also included some kitchen fun. I received a loose tea sampler and one of the flavors is butter rum toddy so I am anxious to try it. I made my husband some ritz stuffed PB cups and put a little nooch in the filling (such a great little addition–thanks for that tip). I have read that Kerrygold is great butter so if color is any indication then it does look nice and rich!

    1. Yes, love the slight texture and saltiness the nooch adds. Almost imperceptible and not something to rush out and buy if you dont have it, but just a nice little…extra bonus :)

  9. What a beautiful bunch of flowers! My boyfriend and I tend to give each other silly little presents for Valentine’s Day but I did get a rose from the restaurant we went to last night :D

  10. Awww :) they are beautiful! Glad you got in some baking too. How interesting that the two butters look so different. J got me my favorite cheap vday candy :)

  11. Awww, everyone needs beautiful flowers and melted chocolate on Valentine’s Day…I’m so glad you had a good one!

Thanks again for doing such an awesome giveaway, Averie! I can’t wait to dive in to that cookbook! =)

  12. I’ve never once gotten flowers! Oh well. I’ve bought them for myself a few times though.

I worked all of Valentine’s Day and had a stomachache for a good 4 hours during it. I love the holiday though and hearing what others are doing.
