The Tall & Short Of It

PinSave

TGIF!  What a whirlwind week!  Glad it’s over. Time to hopefully recharge my batteries a bit this weekend.

Last week I took Skylar to the doctor for her 4 year old checkup.  Even though we celebrated her birthday a few weeks back, this was the soonest they could get us in.

Her checkup report card?

She’s perfectly healthy, doing wonderfully, thriving, and everything looks perfect and on track.  I didn’t need a doctor to tell me that, but hey, nice to know an unbiased professional validated what my mommy intuition already knew.

Practicing flying like a bird. She has energy to spare.  And then some.

She is also really tall and came in at the 95th percentile.  Another thing I already knew and didn’t need a chart to validate is that she’s very tall.

Not a big surprise that she’s really tall because I am a little over 5’10”.  Growing up, I was always in the 95-100th percentile for height, too.  The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I used to be taller than all the girls.  And the boys. Not really that “great” when you’re 13.  But I love being tall now!

I hope Skylar embraces her height because I have a feeling she will be a tall adult, too.

Time to eat!

Make your weekend easy with something that makes planned leftovers.  Cook once, eat twice with Vegan “Bean & Lentil” Sloppy Joes.

Or maybe Mango Balsamic Rice with Mixed Vegetables & Garbanzos is more your speed

No matter what, make sure you have dessert ready for the weekend!

Try No-Bake Chocolate, Chia, & Oat Bars (Vegan, GF) and topped with Powdered Sugar

An old, cringe-worthy photo but hey, looks aren’t everything. Taste is where it’s at.  And these are tasty and take about 5 minutes to make.

From my last post about Free Grocery Money, it was fun to hear what you’d buy with $25 or what usually comprises your shopping orders.

Questions:

1. Were you tall, average, or short for height when growing up?  Has that changed or did the pattern hold into adulthood?

I was always tall, still am.

2. Do you like your height?

I used to hate being taller than everyone.  I didn’t want to be short, but I wanted to be more average.

Also, there is something about being considered “petite” that I think would be fun.  Maybe not forever, but if I could “sample” being petite, I would.

No one ever looks at me and uses the word petite.  Sometimes (frequently) people say things like, “Boy you’re big!”   I am tall, yes.  But I don’t consider myself to be “big”.   The labels that others place on us and that we in turn place on ourselves are so powerful.  But that’s a whole other post.

As an adult, I do embrace my height and wear heels.  As long as I am already tall, I may as well be well into the 6’2″+ range with heels.   What can I say, I have never been average.

3. If you could pick what you think would be the perfect height, what would you pick?

I will go with what I am 5’10”.  How’s that for embracing the hand I was given and self-acceptance.

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. that’s neat that skylar is so tall for her age – my nieces are also in the 95-99th percentile for height, ever since they were born. skylar has an excellent role model in her mom in terms of how to be confident with a tall stature and how to carry it well!
i am 5’5.5″! i was always super tall, from primary school right on up. my parents were sure i was going to be over 6′ tall! but i stopped growing in 7th grade, and eventually, most people caught up. i love my height, now – feels just right!
    enjoy the weekend!

  2. Skylar is lovely! She just radiates health and energy…and those eyes jump right off the screen! Good work, Mommy! :)

  3. I was always an average height growing up. I finished growing at 5’6”. Not to tall, or short… Ill take it ;)

Skylar looks so happy, healthy, and energetic all of the time. She is 100% adorable :)

  4. Skylar is beautiful! :)

I was always one of the tallest in my class too, but I only ended up being about 5’8. I do wear heels a lot though, so I think people think I’m taller, ha.

    Have a great weekend!!

  5. I always wanted to be petite too. I have always been a ‘girlygirl’ so I thought being tiny would be fun and I would appear more dainty, however, I am only 5’6, but I frequently wear heels so that kicks me up to more like 5’9. I didn’t really notice that I was ‘tall-ish’ until one day when I had a crush on a guy who was shorter than me, I just couldnt get past the heigh difference. Now I don’t mind it as much people always compliment me on being tall so I learned it wasn’t so bad at all. I think it sometimes takes people time to love the look they were born with, I went through the same phase of hating my fair skin when I was younger and everyone was tan but now I get compliments on that too. I always wish my adult self could go back and tell my highschool self to have confidence.

  6. I was always short growing up – my birthday is much later in the year so I was technically a year younger than everybody else. Now I guess I’m still considered short (I’m 5’4) but I have a lot of friends who are shorter than 5′ so I often feel tall when I’m with them.
I’d like to be just a bit taller just so that I didn’t have to get all of my pants/dresses hemmed. I also have a shorter upper body and a wider chest so tops fit really weird 80% of the time – they dig into my sides but hang down too low. The tailor really really likes me!! haha
Therefore, my perfect height would be 5’6 – just enough to save me a bit of money and have clothes off the rack fit normally!! ;)

  7. I’m 5’3″ and love it. My posture makes me look taller than that anyways :D

Hope you have a restful weekend!

  8. Skylar is such a beautiful child!! I noticed that she looks tall for her age and I think that’s wonderful! She (and you!) are very lucky!! I suppose I was average height growing up, but I’m barely 5’3″ now, so I guess I’m below average as an adult. :( My mom is only 4’9″ – 4’10”, so it could be worse I guess!!!

Ideally, I’d love to be around 5’8″, but also wouldn’t object to taller than that after I’m well beyond the awkward teenage years now. ;) The taller you are, the more calories you can have. haha So, inside I feel like a 6’8″ man with my appetite. :D

  9. I love seeing Skylar’s smile…it definitely seems like a common “look” for her, too; always happy!!
Growing up I think I was pretty average. Now, I don’t think I’m tall (5’8″ish) but then I remember that I’m taller than my mom and my boss (a man) and the height of my closest male friend, but I think he’s just short :P
I always wanted to be short just do be “different,” (and so I could ride the ponies…) but now I’m fine with this height. And I just solved the problem by getting a big pony :P

  10. Awww, Skylar is such a sweetheart! Glad everything went well at the doctor. I was always tall for my age when I was YOUNG… early bloomer I guess? But I’ve now leveled out at 5’5″. I’m definitely accustomed to this height and love it!

  11. Great post Averie, glad Skylar is healthy though with the great food you cook, it’s no surprise. I guess I’m used to being 5ft 5, all of my sisters (except for one) and my mum are smaller than me so we’re not really a tall family at all. I’ve often thought that it would be nicer to be taller but I can’t really change my height so I’ve to make the best of it. Have a fun weekend.

  12. Skylar is THE CUTEST! She just radiates joy, it’s so easy to tell she’s got a good mama!

I’m 5’9, always the tallest girl in my class, and I’ve always LOVED IT. The taller the better, I say!

  13. I’m 5’7″, which is about 2 inches taller than the national average. I like being on the taller side!! Growing up I was always about the same height as my peers, then in the span of 7th grade I shot up 5 inches. 9 months. Talk about a growth spurt!! Honestly, I wouldn’t mind another few inches. My best friends are 5’9″, 5’10” and 5’11”, so even though I’m relatively tall next to “normal” girls, I’m a little shortie next to them. Plus I think there’s something about tall people that commands attention- you can definitely rock it!!

  14. Hey. I’ve never commented before, but the height post pulled me in. I bet, back to back, you and I are dead even. I’m just a hair over 5’10” also. And my daughter Lily is looking exactly like I did at her age. I’ve always thought that 5’9″ would be the perfect height. But I’m happy where I am – at least pants have gotten a lot easier to buy than they were in H.S. They just didn’t make the longer inseams back then. I actually bought jeans recently from Banana Republic that are too long – that has never happened before. :)

  15. I am quite on the opposite side of the spectrum. I’m short, have always been the shortest in my school growing up, and even though I’m married to a guy over a root taller than me, my 3 kids are short too!
I’m just shy of 5’2″. I will admit, I used to be very unhappy about this when I was a child. People would always assume I was much younger than I was, and I felt I was treated poorly and picked on for my shortness.
Now though, I love being short. There are so many other adjectives to describe me, being “fun sized” is just one of them! I’m also happy to report that at least two of my kids (my girls of course) don’t mind being short. In the end we’re happy, healthy, and miniature!
