The Tall & Short Of It

PinSave

TGIF!  What a whirlwind week!  Glad it’s over. Time to hopefully recharge my batteries a bit this weekend.

Last week I took Skylar to the doctor for her 4 year old checkup.  Even though we celebrated her birthday a few weeks back, this was the soonest they could get us in.

Her checkup report card?

She’s perfectly healthy, doing wonderfully, thriving, and everything looks perfect and on track.  I didn’t need a doctor to tell me that, but hey, nice to know an unbiased professional validated what my mommy intuition already knew.

Practicing flying like a bird. She has energy to spare.  And then some.

She is also really tall and came in at the 95th percentile.  Another thing I already knew and didn’t need a chart to validate is that she’s very tall.

Not a big surprise that she’s really tall because I am a little over 5’10”.  Growing up, I was always in the 95-100th percentile for height, too.  The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I used to be taller than all the girls.  And the boys. Not really that “great” when you’re 13.  But I love being tall now!

I hope Skylar embraces her height because I have a feeling she will be a tall adult, too.

Time to eat!

Make your weekend easy with something that makes planned leftovers.  Cook once, eat twice with Vegan “Bean & Lentil” Sloppy Joes.

Or maybe Mango Balsamic Rice with Mixed Vegetables & Garbanzos is more your speed

No matter what, make sure you have dessert ready for the weekend!

Try No-Bake Chocolate, Chia, & Oat Bars (Vegan, GF) and topped with Powdered Sugar

An old, cringe-worthy photo but hey, looks aren’t everything. Taste is where it’s at.  And these are tasty and take about 5 minutes to make.

From my last post about Free Grocery Money, it was fun to hear what you’d buy with $25 or what usually comprises your shopping orders.

Questions:

1. Were you tall, average, or short for height when growing up?  Has that changed or did the pattern hold into adulthood?

I was always tall, still am.

2. Do you like your height?

I used to hate being taller than everyone.  I didn’t want to be short, but I wanted to be more average.

Also, there is something about being considered “petite” that I think would be fun.  Maybe not forever, but if I could “sample” being petite, I would.

No one ever looks at me and uses the word petite.  Sometimes (frequently) people say things like, “Boy you’re big!”   I am tall, yes.  But I don’t consider myself to be “big”.   The labels that others place on us and that we in turn place on ourselves are so powerful.  But that’s a whole other post.

As an adult, I do embrace my height and wear heels.  As long as I am already tall, I may as well be well into the 6’2″+ range with heels.   What can I say, I have never been average.

3. If you could pick what you think would be the perfect height, what would you pick?

I will go with what I am 5’10”.  How’s that for embracing the hand I was given and self-acceptance.

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Yay for Skylar’s report card! She is just so beautiful and happy-looking. And tall, for sure. Like you–tall but by no stretch of the imagination ‘big’–slender and beautiful-figured. Lovely long limbs.

I was really short as a little kid, but have ended up at 5ft4. And it’s fascinating how ‘relative’ it is whether that’s tall or not. In the context of my Israeli family, it’s definitely on the tall side. In England, I was one of the shortest of my friends, always. In the US, it seems right around average (although people in AK seem a bit taller generally). I like being small and fitting into small things, so I think I’d be happier even shorter. But I’m fine with how I am too–I have proportionally very long legs and arms, so I can reach things well!

  2. Coming from a shortie tell Skylar she is lucky! :) I wouldn’t love to be 5’7. I think that is perfect.

I made the roasted cinnamon chickpeas the other day mmmmm…..

  3. So glad your peanut is doing well :) And loving the looks of your sloppy beans…can’t get enough of that goodness. I have always been tiny. My sister was the opposite. They thought she was going to be SO tall and then…she stopped growing :) She now sits at a happy 5’4/5’5″. I used to hate being small- now I love it!

  4. I’m like 5′ 5.5” and I’m content with it. Sometimes when I see a really handsome shorter guy I wish I was shorter, but then I see an ever cuter, taller guy and I’m happy :) hah

  5. Always was tall, and still am– just under 5’10. I don’t mind it…but I hate not being able to wear some of the cute shoes out there that have 4 or 5 inch heels!

  6. I’m 5′ 6… but used to be 5′ 7.. I shrunk when I got pregnant with my first son. Strange!

  7. I was always average height growing up, even maybe a little taller than some of my peers, but as an adult I only reached 5’2″!
It’s okay, I like being short though!

  8. My height it completely average, which I’m pretty thankful for. I’m 16 and at around 5ft4in :) When I first saw a picture of Skylar I thought she was five, when she was actually three! haha very glad she’s healthy!

  9. I used to be tall. How, you might ask? I was 5’5″ when I was 10, and I am 5’5″ as a 23 year old. I grew really fast and went through puberty early. So everyone in my family thought I would be one of the giants. XD I’m the shortest in my immediate family (mom is 5’9″ and dad was 6’3″) but most of my aunts and uncles are a lot taller. The tallest person in our family is 6’7″ if you can believe it!

But I like my size. It means I can fit into the rollercoaster easier than any of my cousins, hah!

  10. I have always wanted to be 5’7”; ever since I was younger that was the “perfect” height to me. I have been the same height since about 6th grade – 5’4” I used to be “tall” except everyone else kept growing and I stopped! My husband is 6’8”, so I have pretty much accepted the fact that our future children will be much, much taller than me!

    1. that is awesome he is so tall. I used to date a guy who was 6’7″. I loved it!

  11. I’m 5 10″ and now love it, I was always the tallest at school and felt a little awkward but grew to love it, especially when I could get into bars and clubs without being carded hmmm ! However, I get fed up with the shoes and clothes shopping aspect, in the UK I’m between the normal and large shoe ranges and the tall clothes are always more expensive and I never ever get a bargain that’s the negative. When I visit the USA I bring empty luggage and load up on shoes. sneakers and pants.

  12. Hi

I am happy with my height but I have another question since I have saw your Skylar:-)
I have 22 moths old girl and I would like to ask you about food and supplements you give your girl. Does she eat all vegan food or she have some animal products? If not do you give her any supplement like B12 and D vitamin? I do not worry about vitamin D because in my country all kids from birth up to 3 years old have to take vitamin D prescription drops, but I am little worry about vitamin B12. I give my girl mostly vegan food so besides those Vitamin D I gave her drops of B12. What do you think about it?
Thank you very very much for respons

    1. I really dont want to dispense nutrition or health advice for someone else’s kiddo but for us, Skylar eats a largely plant based diet but does have some animal products in her diet so I don’t do many supplements with her. But to each their own, you have to do your research and do what works for you.

  13. I have been reading your blog for awhile and am delurking now!

I am about 5’9 and have been since grade 7. I used to hate being tall, however stopped caring by the time I was 20. I have better things to worry about. I used to wish I could wear heels without being over 6 foot, however I can’t wear heels because of my incredibly high arches. So, I don’t mind at all! :)

  14. Throughout elementary school I was always the 3rd shortest kid in my classes. I was taller than Cindy Musello and Debbie Wright, both of whom were classified as midgets by the time they reached high school. (Is that a valid diagnosis nowadays?)

Then I hit puberty, at which time I zoomed up to my current height of 5’4-1/2″, and simultaneously filled out a bra pretty well.

    1. “simultaneously filled out a bra pretty well.”– I bet you became instantly popular with the boys :)
