Here are this week’s Thursday Things

1. My blog is going to be called Averie Cooks going forward.

I haven’t officially changed the URL, so you will still type in loveveggiesandyoga.com to access my site, but the name of the blog, logo, and some minor cosmetic mini-makeover type changes to my homepage are underway.

Those are the technical difficulties I was alluding to yesterday and if you tried to access my site in the past 24 hours and have noticed anything strange, that’s what’s up. I’ve got tech people working on things, but since nothing ever goes according to plan, and I couldn’t just do a big, happy, It’s Done and Here’s the Big Reveal type post, I figured I’d clue you in to what’s been going on and spill the beans rather unceremoniously.

2. I changed my Twitter name to @AverieCooks

If you used to follow me at @LoveVeggiesYoga, you don’t have to do a thing. You’re now following me @AverieCooks. Twitter makes it easy to make that change without losing a single follower.

My Facebook Fan Page is a whole different story because if you have more than 100 fans, Facebook will not allow you to change the name of your fan page. You have to start from ground zero and create a brand new one with the new name and I’m not sure I want to do that.

3. I changed my Instagram name to AverieSunshine

4. Why did I change the name of my blog?

When I started my blog three years ago, I had no idea that I’d stick with blogging, what I’d wind up wanting to blog about, or any of the twists and turns life could or would take. The blog name that suited me three years ago is not the blog name that suits the current focus and direction of my blog today or that I’ve been going in the past year or so.

Although I do love vegetables, and I do love yoga, I also love baking, desserts, and cooking in general, so it was time for a new name.

Not to mention, the daily emails, comments, and confusion that folks are under when they find my blog based on name only and see something like this plastered on the home page, when they were expecting vegetables and yoga, well yeah, change was needed.

I’m eventually going to change the  URL to averiecooks.com but let’s take things one tech glitch one thing at a time.

5. The new Canon 5D Mark III has been revealed. This is very big news in photography circles. If you’re a photographer, you may want to pre-order now, but first you may want to win the lottery.

6. I recently posted about Flour and a comparison and discussion.

A reader directed me to this Cook’s Illustrated comparison of all-purpose flours

“We set out to learn if there was a single all-purpose flour that could best handle most any recipe. Six months later, we had the answer….”

You can subscribe for a free trial to Cooks Illustrated if you want the answer.

7. The winner of the Digital Kitchen Scale & Nutritionist Consultation Giveaway is Paula who said,

“I would use a digital scale to weigh ingredients in grams for recipes that don’t also give the US equivalent.”

8. I need a drink. It’s been a couple of very crazy days. But since it’s a little early for booze, I’m going to settle for apple pie in a cup.

9. If that doesn’t work, I’ll move on to one of these.

10. And if that doesn’t work, chocolate and peanut butter always works to calm the nerves and make everything right with the world.

If you’re a blogger, do you like the name of your blog? Ever thought of changing it?

Even if you’re not a blogger, thinking about where you were in your life years ago, compared to where you are today, no doubt many of us have changed dramatically, and in many different facets of our lives. No one has a crystal ball and can predict where we’re going to be in years to come. All you can do is take one day at a time and enjoy the ride.

Evolving, tweaking, growing, trying new things, changing. It’s a beautiful thing.

Changing your blog at a tech level? It’s not a beautiful thing.

  1. Congrats on the change! Being open and willing to evolve as a human is so important but so easy to deny. I like the metaphor of a river: if it is not moving, it becomes stagnant and gets pretty gross. Meanwhile, it sometimes is moving along so smoothly it looks like a beautiful sheet of glass-it almost appears still yet only achieves this by remaining in perpetual motion. The more we change, the more we stay who we are…I did not make this metaphor up but I love it.

    1. Stagnation is just not a good thing…
And that passage and concept…is gorgeous! I can NEVER remember things like that off the top of my head. It’s like reciting poetry, or a practical joke, off the top of my head. My brain doesn’t remember things in that format!

  2. I called mine simply J … I really don’t care for my name and so many call me J, just j … semplicemente … j. When I started reading blogs I felt that everyone had an interesting or funny catch … mine was simply me … whatever I happen to be at that time … I started as a place to post my pictures, my thoughts, my travel (OK, my business trips) … I love yoga, running (after I am done), healthy eating (when I can manage), photography (though I have no clue) … so my blog is all that and more or less at any given time … I hope that it being simply me … at a particular time and moment will be all it can be … for me.

I hope the name will suit it going forward … because I probably won’t be able to come up with anything else … and no one really likes a nameless blog. :) :) :)

Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!

    1. I would have had NO idea what your name was…other than J…if I didn’t “know” you via email and if someone only uses their first initial, I figure they are doing it for privacy and i always respect that & never use their full name in a comment reply type thing.

  3. Love your new name! It goes with your new photo and reflects how your blog has evolved. Seems like you’ve found your groove! I’ve never won anything in a give away from a blog so I am excited to have won the digital scale–thank you! We’ve had trouble with our hotmail acct. for 2 days now so I can’t access my e-mail. Hopefully this will be resolved soon!

  4. Thanks for heads up on iherb! I just placed an order, I am obsessed with Justin’s Chocolate Almond Butter… I highly recommend! :) Also love the new name!

  5. yay! change is good when life throws changes at you or when you feel like you need something else that suits you better. i did the same thing earlier last year. i had the domain name juliechiou.com and i started food blogging and i just didn’t want my name in it so i changed my url and blog name to table for two and it stuck ever since :) first few days of switching over is annoying but it’s so worth it in the end! i love your new name and logo :)

    1. I love your blog name…it’s perfect and reflective of a cooking blog before someone even clicks over, which is a bonus :)

  6. Averie we think the new name is great! and yes blogs change and people change and that is ok :)
glad you found what you enjoy and stick with it!!!
and that oreo cake —- WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    xoxo

    1. Thanks, ladies! your site looks gorgeous…I love how you’ve transformed it over the years!!!

  7. The new name is great, congrats! :) Looking forward to following Averie Cooks!

    1. thanks, hon! Not to much is going to “change” but the site looks way better now…it’s done!

  8. just wondering and sorry if you have already commented on this.. but are you still going to have links to the yoga articles you’ve already written on your newly changed named blog? :) lol just wondering. also did you choose the winner of the yoga mat you were giving away? just wondering since i could definitely use one.. i’m using a towel! PS I love all the delicious goodness you’ve been posting great job and i support your change! onward and upward as they say..

    1. yes everything I’ve ever written will still be accessible, just don’t plan to write additional posts, or very in depth ones, on topics of fitness or yoga. But all old posts are still accessible.

yes winner was announced the day the contest ended at the end of the post that day.

  9. Congrats! That’s the great thing about blogging… things really do tend to evolve, especially when your blog reflects your life- because life evolves! I think it’s a beautiful decision to change things.
I feel ya on the tech stuff though- that process is not so beautiful…

    1. thank god things are 99% done as I am g-chatting with my techie right now and it’s almost done!

  10. love the name change and this post! Yes, I had Ingredients, Inc as my company website since 2001 so merged my website to a blog. Life sometimes doesn’t make sense, and you have to change things up. I love your new name, and I think it’s great!

    1. You were quite the visionary to start the company with the name you did…way back in 2001! And congrats on everything you’ve been accomplishing recently. you go girl!

  11. oh boy do I want to change my name.
i can’t tell you how many other vanilla sugars there are out there….when i started out it was just me

    1. I honestly had your blog and another blogger confused for about a year. There are even times I type in the first few letters of vanilla, and my browser has both of you saved and her blog pops up, rather than yours, and then I have to type in your full addy. I can’t believe how many vanilla’s and sugar’s there are though…seriously. TONS!

  12. I kinda saw that coming ;) I could tell you weren´t happy any longer with the blog scheme.
I hope things will go smoothly with this transition!
Looking forward to your “new” blog!

  13. WOW those oreo cookie cake bite thingys look AMAZING!!!!!!! :)
As for my blog name, it was hard for me to choose it, but right now I’m happy with run, lift, live. It suits my life for now :)

  14. Haha…I was wondering if you might be changing it sometime soon. It’s funny, even after changing the name of my blog, I still kind of think of it as “Newlywed, Newly Veg”– even though I no longer fit into either of those categories!!

    Love the new name!

    1. I know you went thru this a year or so ago…I love your (new) vibe.. NWNV seems like a lifetime ago now!
