Here are this week’s Thursday Things
1. Want really bright white icing rather than icing that’s just slightly off-white or dull? Try Bright White Soft Gel Paste
When I saw Cheryl recommend Bright White and Bridget recommended it to her, and since both those ladies are amazing cake decorators and bakers, I knew I needed to order this, because sometimes you just want your icing to be white and bright enough to need sunglasses when you’re looking at your cookies.
2. All in all, I was very happy with the way the Strawberry Cake Mix Cookies with Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting turned out. They were so soft and moist, but…
…I just wished the icing had that POP of really, really white brightness. I can’t wait to try the Bright White out on my next batch of…anything.
3. Have you seen Bridget’s Sock It To Me Cookies? Adorable.
4. Or Cheryl’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Cookies using the infamous New York Times recipe? I’ve been wanting to try that one, after playing around with the Cook’s Illustrated Recipe.
5. A Day in the Life of Matt Armendariz of Matt Bites. I adore him and the peek into his day-to-day life in that post.
I had one of the singular best days of my life, ever, with him and Adam last year.
6. Culinary District. “Offering a hand-picked selection of essential products which include the best imported and domestic food items, commercial cookware, equipment, cutlery, specialty tools, china and glass ware, table top, packaging for food products, and bake ware.”
From exotic chocolate sauces to knives to Vita-Mixes, they’ve got you covered.
7. Or Mango Pickles. They’ve got those covered, too, in case you found yourself with a craving for a product you probably didn’t know existed.
I am obsessed with all things mango and I’d be game for trying those.
8. This Etsy Shop. I love beautiful, one-of-a-kind anything, and pottery is high on that list.
9. Did you know that there’s only one space after a period at the end of sentences? I recently learned this typography factoid and honestly, I was shocked. I went through college, and was getting my master’s degree when I got pregnant with Skylar, and have written one or two term papers in my life and was surprised to learn that my junior high typing teacher and English teacher and most every professor I ever took classes from told me to double-spacing after a period. Now I am trying to break myself of the double tap-tap on the spacebar after periods and just give one tap.
10. I’ve posted more savory recipes in the past week than I have in months, combined. What’s gotten into me?
I better go have an Orange Coconut Banana Donut to make up for it.
What are your Thursday Things?
Do you like finding out about new baking products as much as I do?
Did you know about the single-spacing after periods rule?
Feel free to Link Up anything fun, exciting, tasty, or noteworthy you want to showcase by clicking on the blue button
I want mango pickle.
you and me both!
My friend invited me over for a cup of esspresso. I am currently obsessed with her nepresso milk frother! It made Starbucks quality froth in seconds. I must have one ;)
like that? worth the $85??
That is the one! I think it is worth the money. The froth was so thick it was like whipped cream! Considering how big most of my small kitchen appliances are, I don’t even think I would notice this little thing ;)
Have you ever tried adding an egg white to your frosting? With a tiny pinch of salty, it will become extra white :)
I think you are doing really well with the pictures of your savory dishes!!
see that’s the difference between Americans & Europeans..Americans would FREAK OUT about raw egg in frosting. Even though certain things like Hollandaise sauce or various sauces and dips (or sushi) are eaten and popular, the egg things gets people all riled up and excited. It’s a great tip though!
haha, so true!
There are things you just don´t understand, right?!
just made a chocolate cake recipe that i linked up :)
thanks for that by the way!
have a wonderful thursday! Xo
they look awesome!
Hey Averie, just wondering if you know about the Wilton Clear Vanilla Extract that can also help make icing super white! It doesn’t have the best vanilla flavor but I have used it for cake decorating before and does make the icing brighter. Have a good rest of the week =)
Funny I do know about it but I don’t buy the Wilton…I buy my grocery store brand (much!!! cheaper) and when I go to Aruba, I can literally get 8 oz of clear vanilla for like $2.99 It’s so cheap it’s ridiculous and I bring it home in my suitcase :)
I also just found out there’s only one space after a period…I always thought there were two!
I never even knew about double space after periods, I’ve always done one. What did you get your masters degree in out of curiosity?
grad work was in psychology (marriage & family therapy, MFT) is what I was studying.
I do like savory recipes, and I like to look at your baking creations too!
This Thursday? hm, I am looking at all food that I can’t eat after I had my wisdom tooth removed yesterday… Hungry… :) So, food is on my mind, a lot of food!
Hi Averie. My go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe is the cooks illustrated one as well. It’s so delish and the cookies are so big! If you find a better one let me know and I will give it a try.
When did this single spacing after a period happen? I should ask my daughter if she is being taught that in school. I always double space after a period. I’m not the best with grammar anyway, it’s just not my thing and I accept it. Zoe is always correcting me on my blog after it’s written. It’s sad when your 12 year old starts giving you grammar lessons.
Great list, lots of fun goodies. I kind of like the more savory recipes.
Not much here besides work, I did just impulse buy a weekend getaway to wine country from Groupon that I’m pshyched about!
Mango pickle sounds AMAZE amazing. I LOVE your savoury recipes. And those Sock it to Me cookies are quite possibly the cutest things I’ve ever seen. That is all.
:)
glad you like it all :)
Single spacing? Don’t we always single space when we type? I guess back in using a typewriter and word processor I probably did do two spaces. But now, single spacing it is…
Love this post too…and all the stuff, food, and stalking (I stalk Matt Bites).
No “we” don’t. Lol. Seriously I think it’s about half and half but we’ll see what everyone says they do.
And thanks for the clarifications on the pudding. Mix the pudding, don’t need to wait for it to set, pour the soupy pudding into the cake mix, continue on… :)
I am doing my masters thesis right now and according to the new edition of the APA Style Guide (American Psychological Association Edition 6) there are two spaces after a period. In the last edition they only had one, but they have now changed it back to two for readability. Strangely enough I just checked on this last night! So, don’t worry, according to APA (the most used style for academic writing), you are correct the way you were doing it!
Ok this is new info and I guess for the past 20 years Ive been doing it wrong and just about the time I was going to change, they changed it back. Actually when I was in college, 100% guaranteed I know that APA format was double spacing after a period b/c I had to do it and had teachers who were APA sticklers!! So now who knows if it should be single or double…
Okay, that single-spacing rule is crazy! Why haven’t I ever heard this? And why won’t I allow myself to obey it? Look at me, I just can’t help myself. It’s an interesting piece of knowledge, and I am glad you told me, but my hands- they won’t let me.
My hands disobey, too! And some people are already writing in with conflicting reports of what’s current…seems “they” can’t make up their minds!
I love Culinary District.
I have given up following the different styles, having been taught both AP and modern language styles… also, there is the thing with font spacing (old typewriters are mono, while computers are proportional). I could go on and on… having education in both writing and sciences, I learned both ways :D
my Thursday thing – a NAP. I was up at 3am in the ER with Dad. :( he is okay now, just decided things were “boring” and wanted to give us a scare.
XO
I just found out of Cul District. Love it.
AP and modern language styles– okay that’s likely where much of the confusion is coming into play. I want to just pick one way, and do it, but it seems even the experts don’t have a set standard!
I’m loving the savory recipes! Love love love!!!
Thanks..the photography part is sooo hard though! To make it look decently pretty enough to publish :)
