Watching Movies

PinSave

Did you watch the Oscars Sunday night?  I didn’t.

I haven’t seen a movie in over 5 years.  I know, shocking.  But I have lived.

The last movie I saw was when I was pregnant with Skylar because we had no air conditioning in the 1925 era house we were living in at the time and I was so sick with morning sickness all day sickness and just wanted to be in the a/c.  So we went to the movies.  I was sick the whole time and in the bathroom and can’t even remember what movie I “saw”.  But at least I was cool.

After giving birth, not sleeping, and caring for a baby the last thing I wanted to do or had time to do was go sit somewhere for 3 hours.  And pay a babysitter for the pleasure on top of it.  It just wasn’t happening.

Netflix, online videos, and other ways to see movies without actually going to the theater?  Well, honestly, I’d rather spend my limited unstructured free time blog-reading, magazine-reading, or watching some of my favorite TV shows that I DVR rather than movies.

And that’s how I fell out of the habit of seeing movies.  And have never fallen back in.  Crazy but true.

What’s crazier is that I eat a salad every day.  No, that’s not really crazy.

What’s crazy is that I never get sick of them!  It’s a food groove, not a rut.

It’s all about mixing up the dressings and adding some kick to your greens.  Try Horseradish Relish Dressing to spice up your plants.

I like to pair my salads with edamame or tofu.  Such as Sesame Ginger Maple Tofu

Or Pumpkin “Bread” Honey Tofu.  If you freeze the tofu first, it almost turns into a pumpkin bread-like texture.

It’s really good.  Try it!

And every day, I have coffee.  I choose from my stash ‘a plenty that I’ve reviewed here

And most every day, I have chocolate in some form.

From my last post about Being Debt Free and Saving Money, thank you for the wonderful comments you left.  And thanks to new readers for finding my blog and also for those of you who have de-lurked recently and are commenting.  Many thanks.

Many of you are debt-free.  Congrats!

Many of you aren’t and feel it weighs on you at eats at you.  I feel for you and understand.

And all of us seem to want to be better at saving money and putting money away for the future or unexpected situations like job losses or illnesses or babies coming and mom-to-be can no longer work.

I think it’s so important to acknowledge these things, even though talking about money and facing reality can be tough.  It’s better to think about it and plan and make life choices with a full complement of information rather than sweeping these thoughts and conversations under the proverbial rug.

Nor would we want to sweep a dessert idea under the rug: Raw Vegan Mexican Wedding Cookies

Questions:

1. Did you watch the Oscars?  Did any movies you wanted to win, win anything?

No.

2. Did you watch the Red Carpet Shows?  Any thoughts about what everyone was wearing?

Since I was clueless about the movies, I did see some red carpet dresses that were both amazing.  And awful.

3. In general, do you watch movies?  And if so, how often?

I used to watch tons when I was younger.  And then parenthood happened.  But kids aren’t going to change your life.  Sure.

And as I said in the post, I’d rather read blogs, write and keep up my own blog, watch my favorite tv shows on DVR, read magazines, talk a walk outside, or play with Skylar.

4. Favorite movie(s) of all time?

Some movies I’ve liked over the years: Pretty Woman, Titanic, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Brokeback Mountain, Erin Brokovich, gosh this is hard to just name drop off the top of my head, so I will stop.

Oh and I was in the movie A Walk to Remember.

I’ve done two posts on it:

Part 1

and Part 2 with a video clip

Give me your top movie picks!

  1. Love your blog!!! yOu had bad morning sickness too! I have a 3yr old boy and was sooo sick it was the first time ever I couldn’t go to the gym. It was weird but I know it was for a good cause, did you work out though out your pregnancy? Will you have anymore? Im kinda afraid to get that sick again! Once again love your blog you are my inspiration:)

  2. I don’t tend to watch the Oscars – I do watch the Baftas which are the British equivalent. I was excited that a Brit won best actor this year though :D

I do watch movies but I tend to get them on lovefilm (UK version of Netflix) as I hate going to cinema unless it is like 9am and there is no-one there but me! I guess I can be anti-social.

Favourite films of all time… Love Actually, About a Boy, You Me + Dupree, the Good the Bad and Ugly and Brokeback Mountain, to name a few!

  3. Very cool you were in a movie – you should be a movie star – you are gorgeous! I never watch TV but I’m a big fan of watching movies on Netflix instead. The last movie I saw at the theater was Avatar (3D) and the movie reel broke half way through. Everyone was sent home and this was on New Year’s Eve. Bummer.

  4. I am also completely out of the movie loop. One, I just don’t have time to watch movies these days. And two, going to the theater is ridiculously expensive! There are about a billion things I’d rather spend my money on.

  5. Yes, we watched while eating dinner – not a horrible show, but not the best. Understand about your not seeing movies, my sister hasn’t either since having a baby, her work and parenting schedules are just too crazy.

I eat salad every day too and never get tired with the variety of ingredients and dressing possibilities.

    1. We watched, but didn’t see a lot of the nominated movies.
    2. Sometimes and it’s fun to see all the crazy dresses once in awhile.
    3. Yes, about once a week maybe, usually on weekends.

  6. We rarely go to the movies anymore. With “bargain” matinee prices of $9, it’s cheaper to either rent or buy the DVD when it comes out, with the added bonus of not dealing with rude people.

Movies I own and have watched multiple times: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy; the Matrix trilogy, Serenity, Galaxy Quest…notice a science-fiction/fantasy pattern here?

  7. wow you covered a lot in that article! I love the food photos and I dropped my jaw at you not watching a movie in 5 years!

  8. i’ve checked this blog a couple of times now and i have to tell you that i find it quite great actually.

  9. I recently started checking movies out from the library. I find that I do enjoy spending some time watching a good movie. I don’t have a computer at home so I don’t do blog stalking on the weekends or evenings. I’m very glad that I didn’t pay for the last two I checked out though – not the best.

  10. I love going to the movies. Growing up, my mother took my sister and I to the movies all the time. It’s not just watching movies for me but the experience of going there, sitting in that dark theater, and seeing a film when it’s just released. I’m one of those people who tears up during the old movie montages, seeing a clip of a favorite film, or listening to the film score. Total film nerd.

Some favorites off the top of my head: Shawshank Redemption, Schindler’s List, ET, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Apocalypse Now, Life is Beautiful, Lord of the Rings, Forrest Gump, Back to the Future. OK I have to stop here!

  11. Forgot to mention – one other thing I love about your blog is that I can scroll down to view mulitple blog postings, not just your most recent and I can click the “older posts” link to view prior days. I find it annoying that several other blogs are changing their view to show the most recent post then you have to click a link to view a previous post, etc….ugh so annoying because I don’t know if the link I’m clicking is two days old, 3 days old, etc… :)

    1. from you other comment, thanks for delurking

and this comment…YES i know exactly what you mean about people ONLY having their most current post on their home page. It makes it tricky get to their past posts and you have no idea what you’re getting, how old it is, etc…when i did my site redesign that was something i was very particular about…configuring it to make it USER friendly!

  12. I NEVER goto movies either. I can’t stand theaters and not being able to control the noise of the movie and listening to people talk eat eat just bothers me! I’m very anal about certain things.. and then to pay a ton of money for the displeasure? No thanks!

    Congrats on being debt free.

  13. I still love the Walk to Remember trivia! I watched part of the Oscars, but Anne Hathaway and James Franco were kind of horrible to watch so I turned it off pretty quickly. Inception nabbed a few awards though, which I liked- it’s a Leonardo DiCaprio movie. Need I say more about why I love it?

My movie watching is on and off. At home, I watch them on our elliptical- it makes the time FLY by. And I’ll use Netflix if I feel like procrastinating. When it comes to going to the theater though, I rarely go and if I do, it’s usually alone. I like just zoning out and forgetting the world for awhile!

  14. I just recently (yesterday!) made my own tofu so I’m really excited to try your variations.
